Hanne works with all sorts of dogs from chihuahua’s to bull mastiff’s with all sorts of problems. She is certified in Cat and Dog Behaviour and Animal First Aid from the Animal Welfare College, part of the Royal Veterinary School, Canine Psychology from Animal Care College, has level 3 Grade A pass in Canine Care & Behaviour, and most recently completed a course in Canine Touch; a series of muscle movements that aids recovery from injury, relaxes and detoxifies.

Often those around us, however well meaning their intentions cannot understand the immense feelings of grief and pain caused by the loss of a companion animal however small, big or even scaly. People often battle with feelings of embarrassment at displaying their grief, hiding it away, or remaining afraid of the reactions of others.

Ramshaw Rescue Centre is a non-profit making organisation. We rely on donations made to the centre, without which we could not operate. The animals we rescue consist mainly of: dogs, horses, donkeys and other farm animals. We have been known to rescue ducks, cats, chickens, rabbits, pigeons. In fact anything with a pulse, Kate Wilson will rescue, apart from children!
We boast 20 rescue kennels and an additional 14 newly built separate boarding kennels. Six loose boxes, puppy nurseries, hospital kennel and field shelters. There is Extensive (54 acres) grazing land surrounding the centre.
Rescue
The centre works mainly with dogs and horses. Ramshaw Rescue Centre has rescued and rehoused more than 4,000 dogs and 80 horses, since its humble beginnings in 1995. Kate Wilson, former riding instructor and Darlington Dog Warden, founded the centre due to massive demand.
Boarding
Ramshaw Boarding Kennels has 14 new purpose-built boarding kennels. Each kennel consists of a large sleeping area and plentiful sized run. The dogs are exercised regularly in the surrounding environs that consist of 54 acres of grassland, hedged and fenced (without barbed wire) in traditional manner. We also have two large, fenced play areas.
Ramshaw Boarding Kennels charges a realistic £4.25 fee per day (discount on multiple occupation), which covers all living expenses. Sleeping areas will be heated when necessary. Special diets and other individual requirements (i.e. Insulin injections, epileptic dogs, pregnant bitches etc.) catered for by arrangement.

The concept of the charity grew from a perceived need first identified by Steve Wood, Hyndburn Borough’s Dog Warden. Steve became aware in the course of his duties that seriously injured dogs were being taken to the vet to be euthanaised who might, given funding for treatment, be able to carry on and live a perfectly happy and normal life.
The first dog was Dougal. He ran into the path of oncoming traffic whilst Steve was trying to apprehend him. Instead of having the dog put to sleep Steve went about raising money to fund Dougal’s treatment. Dougal had to have a leg amputated and the cost was £375.
When the second and third cases arrived it was quickly realised that it was the same people helping to raise money therefore the charity was conceived. we had our first official meeting on 21st May 2001.
The charity has a strong membership totaling 190 people, and growing, including the steering Executive Committee. In this committee are Steve Wood as Chairman, Linda Birtwell as Vice Chairman, Vera Atkinson as Treasurer, Georgina Allen as Secretary, Steve Wood and Georgina Allen as Welfare Officers.
All our dogs are strays. After spending a week at the local kennels with no owner in (Aspen Valley) sight we try to foster what dogs we can. The are checked by the vet, they have their first vaccination, wormer and given any treatment they require. At the foster home the dog is microchipped.
There are plenty of ways to become involved in HSDIN. We are always in need of foster carers. We provide and fund everything you and the dog need, in return we ask that you give our dogs help, time and compassion. We need more members to share ideas about events and fund raising ideas. Help with transporting the dogs from A to B and putting up posters in your area.

Does your pet take fright on fireworks night? Or perhaps life is fraught for weeks before and after the event?
Noise phobias in pets related to fireworks are still surprisingly common and affected animals will show extreme fear & shaking, hiding or running away and destructive behaviour.
This year Dorwest Herbs will be taking some very positive measures to help raise awareness that there is help at hand for pet owners. Vets and pet shops will be giving out Dorwest’s leaflets on firework fear, that are packed full of great treatments and techniques to calm terrified terriers and trembling tabbies. There are suggestions for short and long term solutions – some can be started from puppy or kitten hood.
For some families, fireworks just signal weeks of misery for them and their pet. We really want to make people aware that something can be done to help their pet and treatment need not mean keeping your pet heavily sedated. In fact vets now believe that being drowsy or inco-ordinated can make the pet feel worse – there is no way for them to run away from the event that is terrorizing them.
I think we can all imagine how awful that must feel. We know that lots of pet owners get great results with our veterinary licensed Scullcap and Valerian Tablets and Organic Valerian Compound supplement, which are usually given on the recommendation of their vets or local pet shops. The aim is to have a relaxed and calm pet that remains awake and aware of what is going on but is not too disturbed by it.
It is very tempting to just hope that this is a problem that will go away eventually and that the pet will somehow learn to cope but experts do not believe that this is the case. Noise and firework phobias tend to get worse over time, rather than better if you don’t do something to help manage them. We also know of cases where old dogs and cats suddenly start to experience firework fear – perhaps because they feel less able to escape the fearful event, or because their sense of hearing has become distorted. There are lots of hints and tips in our leaflets describing other techniques that can be brought into play to help your cat or dog cope.

I read Jan Fennell’s first book “The Dog Listener” in January 2002 and it made so much sense to me, finally I had found the answers to improve my own dog’s behaviour.

Home Visits
A Consultation will involve approximately a two-hour visit to your home. Jacqueline will meet the family, discuss the pets daily routine, history and behaviour. By then discussing the family’s expectations of the relationship with the pet, an accurate diagnosis & treatment plan can be formulated using force free, kind & effective methods which fit in with the family’s lifestyle.
A full behavioural modification program is implemented on the day for the family to follow on an ongoing basis. The family is advised to send in weekly reports for a month and further telephone/e-mail support can be given. If you would like a follow up visit then a reduced fee will be offered.
For cases where owners feel their pet may not be suited to their specific environment, Jacqueline offers a consultation to discuss the best way to move forward for the pet and the family.

Colin, who now lives in Northampton with his family, has been drawing and painting for most of his life and now specializes in horse portraits, dog portraits, cat portraits and people portraits. He takes a great deal of time trying to capture the likeness and character of every subject that he paints and will blend in a suitable background to enhance the finished portrait when necessary.
Colin’s portraiture is done mainly in graphite pencil or pastel and drawn on quality acid proof paper. All portraits will be mounted by a professional framer and covered in cellophane, unless requested otherwise.
